PRP Hair Restoration

Have you noticed a gradual thinning of your hair? Or maybe some patchy bald spots? Hair loss is a common problem for both men and women, with symptoms appearing for some people while they’re still in their 20s. But the good news is, just about anyone experiencing any degree of hair loss can use PRP therapy for hair restoration.

What causes hair loss?

Male pattern baldness (MPB) or androgenetic alopecia (AGA) accounts for over 95% of hair loss in men. Two thirds of American men will have some degree of hair loss by age 35, and by age 50, about 85% of men have thinning hair. And the problem isn’t exclusive to men.

Women can also experience hair thinning, usually in the front and crown. Female pattern baldness (FPB) affects over 30% of women. Both MPB and FPB have a genetic hormonal component, meaning if either of your parents have thinning hair, there is a good chance you will too. Progressive hair thinning can negatively impact the self-esteem and the well-being of both men and women.

The benefits of PRP therapy for hair restoration

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been shown to increase hair growth and decrease hair loss. PRP therapy is an excellent option for both men and women looking to combat baldness and achieve a more youthful appearance.

What is PRP therapy?

PRP is simply extracted blood plasma with a high concentration of platelets. Platelets are blood cells that -- among other things -- aid in the production of certain cells that help regulate hair follicle development and growth. The process of PRP therapy for hair restoration involves drawing your blood, treating the blood sample to obtain the platelet-rich plasma, and then injecting the PRP into your scalp through a very small needle and syringe.

Why choose PRP therapy for hair restoration?

Hair loss treatment choices are limited, and include minoxidil (Rogaine), finasteride (Propecia) and hair transplantation surgery. All of these treatment options have notable downsides.

Minoxidil and finasteride can take up to a year to produce visible results, and hair can begin to thin out once again when you stop taking the medication. Both medications have serious potential side effects, including weight gain, breast growth, difficulty breathing, decreased libido, and impotence. Finasteride is not recommended for women of childbearing age due to a risk of birth defects.

Although hair transplantation surgery is a more permanent solution, it is quite expensive — often requiring several treatments — and carries the risk of scarring and infection.

But there is a new option available for men and women seeking to address hair loss: Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP! Platelet-rich plasma injection is a simple, cost-effective, and feasible treatment option for both male and female hair loss. Want to learn more?
